The Canberra Innovation Network’s Billion Dollar Series is back, and 2021 will launch with outstanding businessperson Michael Gregg. In this fireside chat format, you’ll hear the real stories of Mike’s journey from Grace Bros retail to investing and serving as a director of ASX standout company Wisetech Global. His personal tales are both thought provoking and relevant idea seeds for entrepreneurs at every stage of the journey from dream to distribution.
Mike led Health Care Networks (HCN) through a management buyout, ASX listing and acquisition. HCN pioneered the use of internet-based health knowledge resources in Australia, and around 90% of Australian public hospitals accessed their online resources. HCH also were major players with Australian clinical software. Mike then invested in WiseTech Global in 2005 and saw it develop from a small private company to a $10 Bn listed company. Around the same time, Mike was an early-stage investor in Conversant Media acquired by HT&E in October 2016. Additionally, he was a director and shareholder in Jeenee Communications, which sold to Amaysim in 2019.
As a founding partner of investment fund Shearwater Capital, Mike works with Zac Zavos and Charles Gibbon, investing mainly in B2B tech companies. Shearwater has so far invested in Playground XYZ, Diffuse Energy, Amber, Earlytrade, GPN Vaccines, Live Preso and Sitemate. Mike also invests personally and investments include WiseTech Global, Surgical Partners, Emudent Technologies, Straker, Ansarada, Wildlife Drones, Brainchanger, BlockTexx, Juxtapos, Underwater Baitsetter, Nabooki, Tractor Ventures and Lava Blue (several of these are Canberra based companies). Mike says he likes to back great people solving important problems.
